The seiner Western Ranger was built in 1938 for Norman "Skip" Gunderson and was registered in Port Alberni, B.C. The boat was 80 feet in length, with a beam of 20' 6" and a draft of 8' 6". It was powered by a 200 horsepower Atlas Imperial diesel engine and, when built, was the most cutting edge vessel of it's kind on the west coast.
